The Reality Of Extensions

Extensions can be a life changing investment.

When done correctly, you can have a whole new head of hair. They can be used to add length, volume, color, texture -  one of these or all of these things! Also, it's the perfect tool to help you grow out your own hair. When done correctly.

When done incorrectly, you can end up with thinning, breakage and even bald spots. Eek!!!

As beauty experts, we see this more than we care to admit to. Extensions on their own are not harmful to the hair. However, there are two main problems we see frequently. Extensions are implemented incorrectly or the type of extension isn't right for you!

So, how do you know which type is good for you?

First off, let's be clear. Grade of human hair matters. There are some brands you should just avoid at all costs. And that's the indicator.. cost!! Harvesting human hair and coloring it to all those different shade options take a lot of time and money. So if it seems like a deal too good to be true - it is!

Secondly, defer to your stylist! Your hairdresser should be properly trained in whatever extension type they are offering you, be using reputable hair and communicate with you effectively.

Questions that need answering before choosing the appropriate extension type for you (or if you are a good candidate at all) include:

Why do you want extensions?
What is your natural hair length, texture and condition?
What is your normal hair routine like?
Do you wear your hair up a lot?
How often can you commit to coming in for maintenance?
Can you commit to brushing your hair everyday?
Do you swim or surf on the regular?

Answers to questions like these can help your stylist figure out the best plan for you. If you want lots of length, have medium - thick hair naturally but can only commit to maintenance every 3-4 months, keratin tip may be best for you. If you want to add volume to your naturally fine - medium hair and explore some color, type-in may be best for you. Letting your stylist know where you usually wear a ponytail helps them place the extensions so they will never be seen! And if you're a die-hard surfer, forget it. You will experience dreading which can also lead to thinning.

All and all, extensions are a wonderful, magical thing! Just do your research and communicate thoroughly with your hairdresser. And remember - don't skimp out!
